The gongs rang out high and loud. The cymbals came in bright and clear. The erhu carried the tune along. As the music rose and fell, light and shadow moved across the screen, and the shadow play performed a familiar story: a hero saved the girl and defeated the outlaw.
The outlaw fell. The girl was saved. The two of them left together.
In front of the stage, a child sat with their chin propped in their hand, watching without blinking.
But his mind had already gone somewhere else: What if the outlaw was not really that bad?
Maybe he had just gone down the wrong road. Maybe that beating was what finally brought him to his senses.
Maybe he and the hero talked afterward. Maybe one fight was all it took for them to understand each other. Maybe they even became friends and set off together.
By the time the lights on the stage dimmed, the story there was over. But the one in the child's head was only just beginning.
