Karez Well is an ancient underground water conservancy project, mainly distributed in arid regions of China, such as Turpan and Hami in Xinjiang. By digging vertical shafts and constructing underground canals, water evaporation is reduced, allowing meltwater from high mountain glaciers to flow along the terrain into deep desert areas.
At its peak, there were 1,838 Karez Wells in Xinjiang, with underground canals totaling 5,272 kilometers in length and a maximum annual water output of 610 million cubic meters. Along with the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, it is known as one of the three great ancient engineering projects of China and is also called the "Underwater Great Wall."
