Mingde Gate was the main southern gate of the imperial city. Its name changed more than once. It was first called Mingde Gate and was later also known as Xuande Gate.
A symbol of imperial authority, it was where the emperor received presentations and watched lantern displays. Nuo ritual processions also set out from here, proceeding along the Imperial Street.
