Cotton first arrived in China from India. The variety that came through Central Asia into Xinjiang was called "Western Route Cotton," or "baidie."
Yet during the Tang and Five Dynasties, its spread was limited to the Western Regions, stopping short at Hexi.
Artifacts and records of Xinjiang's early cotton cultivation are now preserved in the National Museum of China.
