Xue Chou of Kaifeng, a man of mixed Hu and Han descent, was born with an unknown original name. In his youth, he apprenticed under Old Man Xue, mastering miraculous arts: treading on fire and blades, transplanting melons and wells, conjuring clouds and mists at will, and shaping mountains and rivers from thin air—feats that left onlookers in awe. Chou was renowned for his cunning. He assisted Ghostlight Market Elder and Dao Lord Zhu Yousheng in founding the Nine Mortal Ways to resist the Khitan forces, winning great prestige among the people for his strategic acumen.
After Zhu Yousheng's death and as his disciples came of age, Xue Chou retired to oversee the Oil Umbrella faction. He often performed illusionary acts in the Fairgrounds, gaining renown for his craft.
