When the general was still a boy, he carried many doubts in his heart. Why were so many pieces of shattered armor from past generations enshrined in the Guo family ancestral hall? Why did his father and uncle always make him practice writing the words "Chang'an"? And why would his grandfather lie awake through the night over a single frontier report? As the years passed, he walked farther down his path. He grew taller, and his understanding deepened. He passed through Whitecrown Fortress, crossed Howling Sand Post, and went by Peaceward Camp. One day, he wrapped a cloth around a wounded commoner's injuries. When he finished and looked up, he met the person's gaze. In that moment, the general realized that he finally understood.
