Early symptoms are headache, low-grade fever, tiredness, and loss of appetite. Even after a bite or scratch has healed, you might feel pain, numbness, or tingling where you were hurt. Within two to three days, the person can become restless and easily agitated, and may develop a fear of water, wind, or bright light. Just seeing or feeling these things can trigger throat spasms or even full-body convulsions. In the final stage, the patient often becomes calm and the spasms stop, but serious problems set in—paralysis, weak muscles, lost reflexes, dilated pupils, trouble breathing, and heart failure. This phase is extremely dangerous and usually ends in death from respiratory failure within about eight days.
