The court tablet, also known as a hu tablet, was a ceremonial baton held by officials during audiences. Its material reflected rank: third rank and above used jade, fifth rank used ivory, and lower ranks used bamboo or wood. Materials varied, but the size was standardized at one chi and two cun, narrow at the top and wider at the base.
Officials could jot down matters they wished to present, or record the emperor's instructions. It could also be raised to cover the mouth during an audience, a small gesture of propriety and respect.
