The twelve meridians are all anchored to the Source of Vital Qi. This refers to the very root of the twelve channels, the Moving Qi between the Kidneys. It is the origin of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, the foundation of the twelve meridians, the gateway of respiration, and the source of the San Jiao (Triple Burner). It is also known as the Spirit that Guards Against Evil. Thus, Qi is the root of life. When the root perishes, the branches and leaves wither. When the pulse at the inch position feels calm, yet death follows, it is because the Vital Qi has already vanished deep within.
