Master Jingjian, whose surname was Zhong and given name Lingyi, had a father who served as the governor of Wuwei. According to "Biographies of Bhikkhunis", the monk Fashi preached the Dharma outside the west gate of Luoyang City. Upon hearing his teachings, Jingjian attained great enlightenment. Later, she received tonsure and the Ten Precepts from Master Zhishan, becoming China's first ordained bhikkhunis.
