After the Huichang Persecution, Liaowu dreamt beneath the Bodhi Tree of Sins and saw visions of a world in ruin. He awoke in tears. When his disciples asked him, he replied: "The Three Realms are a house aflame, suffering bears down on all. Even the mercy of the Buddha cannot quench the fire. The stains of sentient beings run deep—this is what I have seen." Thus he made a vow to save the world and founded the Path of Rebirth: May cultivators of this path cast off their bodies into the depths of Naraka, shouldering the heavy burden of karma alone—delivering the dreaming, and guiding the weak to bliss.
