Seventh of March, spring chill still in the air, but my heart is warm. I practiced the clamp-dyeing method with the sisters and aunts of Luan City. When the patterned board clamped the plain cloth and it was dipped in the vat, the patterns that emerged were gorgeous, and everyone was overjoyed. I said the method was beautiful, but the cost was high. Unexpectedly, a clever aunt picked up an old board and said the worn parts could be carved out and replaced with new ones, fixed with fish glue, rather than discarding the whole thing. Seeing her care for things warmed my heart.
