Madiao Cards is an ancient Chinese card game invented by the Tang Dynasty monk Yi Xing (Zhang Sui). The cards, resembling leaves in size, were initially based on astronomical and calendrical systems, divided into four categories symbolizing the four seasons. Later, various gameplay styles developed. British historian Joseph Needham even suggested that the Madiao Cards was the ancestor of Western bridge.
