Also known as Danbiao, Heavenly Fire, Fire Mark, or Flowing Flame, this condition is a form of acute infectious dermatitis. Often caused by heat in the blood and the invasion of fire toxins, or by damage to the skin and mucous membranes allowing foul Qi to enter the body, the affliction manifests when these toxic forces stagnate in the skin, block meridians, and impede the flow of Qi and blood. Onset is sudden, typically beginning with chills, fever, headache, body aches, poor appetite, constipation, and dark urine. Soon after, small red patches appear and rapidly spread into large, fiery-red areas—hot to the touch, swollen, and acutely painful.
