The Surangama Sutra is a Buddhist scripture that first circulated widely during the mid-Tang dynasty. Unlike official state translations, its introduction and dissemination were driven entirely by commoner devotees. By the Northern Song, the text had gained significant attention, especially among the Tiantai and Huayan schools, and became a major object of study. Some later Buddhist prophecies speak of a degenerate age, in which the Surangama Sutra will be the first to vanish.
