From the Wei and Jin dynasties through the Northern and Southern dynasties, multi-legged incense burners gained popularity. By the Tang and Song periods, the tripod incense burner had become iconic. In scholarly Song households, a guqin was often accompanied by incense. Burning incense while playing served both to cultivate a tranquil atmosphere and to measure time. This setup is referred to by scholars as Qin Burner.
