Rumors in the palace say the ancient trees in the Rear Garden are haunted. When a long yowl rings out, cats from every corner gather as if attending court. They call it the "Cat Emperor" showing itself. Yet no one claims to have seen its true face. Some say it is a Tang-era cat demon, one that has watched the throne change hands and stayed indifferent to rise and fall alike. Only the pure of heart can catch a glimpse, if only for an instant. Those lost in power and desire will see nothing but vermilion walls shut tight. Others scoff. If you have time for ghost stories, you would do better to hustle for a better post. But those who have truly seen it know this. No matter how the world turns or the years pass, it is always there beneath the tree, waiting for a playmate with a heart as true as its own.
