The piece was performed in the Musicians Institution of the Tang Dynasty. Set to quatrains of five-character lines, it was described in the Tongdian as an ancient melody passed down from the Zhou and Sui dynasties, also known as the "Five-way Lion Dance." The Taiping Tune survived in Tang miscellaneous tunes, Song lyrics, palace entertainments, variety plays, and even in popular performances at Song fairgrounds. Related pieces like Taiping Song appeared in Song dramas. Traces of this piece still remain in Japan and the Ryukyu Islands today.
