One hundred and eighty-six years after the Buddha's nirvana, Ashoka, the Iron Wheel King of Magadha, opened the ancient pagodas of the past, collected 84,000 relics, used the Seven Treasures as resources, and commanded gods and ghosts to build 84,000 pagodas, placing one relic in each. He invited Venerable Yasha, the leading monk among the 168,000 monks at the Kukkutarama Monastery, who emitted 84,000 rays of light from his five fingertips. He ordered the gods and ghosts to follow the light to its end and build a pagoda there. Nineteen such pagodas were erected within the territory of the Great Tang.
