Sooty is a cat often lost, though not by choice. Its ebony fur blends seamlessly with the night. Once it closes its eyes, it vanishes completely into the darkness.
Still, the villagers adore their little shadow, and the nightly search for Sooty has become one of the town's few pastimes.
One time, they couldn't find it anywhere. Just as everyone began to fear the worst, a yowl erupted from a woodpile, and out shot a cat with a singed tail! Sooty had been napping in the warm embers, and almost turned into actual charcoal.
Meow, meow! No one knows what it's saying, but perhaps it's just caught up in the cheerful mood.
