One night, a weary vendor was closing his Rougamo stall.
"Out here in the middle of nowhere, who's going to eat my rougamo?" he sighed. A tiny "Meow?" came from his feet. A scruffy, palm-sized kitten looked up at him.
What harm could one little mouth do? He tossed it a scrap of meat. From that day on, the stall had a regular customer.
Soon, a strange thing happened: the village filled with wanderers, and the kitten would "meow" at each one, as if ordering a bun. Curious, they'd buy one. Business boomed.
One day, a rough-looking wanderer tried to snatch the kitten. The kitten yowled, and the vendor, without a second thought, chased after the man. "What's its name?" the man finally asked, impressed by the chase. "Rougamo," the vendor replied. "With a rougamo vendor for an owner, it'll never go hungry. And with it around, neither will I."
Rougamo, not understanding a word, scrambled up to its perch on the vendor's shoulder and refused to budge.
