Long ago, Gaoxin had two sons. The elder was Yanbo; the younger, Shishen. They lived together in the wilderness, but the two could never live in harmony, and day after day they took up arms against one another. The emperor, dismayed by their strife, separated them: Yanbo was sent to Shangqiu and made guardian of the star Chen, and for this reason, the people of Shang inherited that star, which came to be known as the Shang Star. Shishen was sent to Daxia and given charge of the star Shen. The people of Tang inherited that association, and through it entered into the service of the Xia and Shang dynasties.
