Every year at the reunion dinner, the children of Heaven's Pier keep one eye on the plate of candied fruit. The adults never let them have much. Too sweet, they say. Bad for the teeth. So of course the children wait for a moment when no one is looking, snatch a piece, and shove it into their mouths. Then an adult spots them and calls out, "Hey, not that one. That one's gone bad." But the child just keeps chewing, cheeks puffed out, and somehow it still tastes sweet. Maybe the room is too warm. Maybe the laughter is too loud. Maybe everyone looks too happy for anything to taste wrong.
