Tujings are dominated by maps, with texts explaining the maps, complementing each other. They are one of the unique forms of ancient Chinese maps, later renamed local chronicles. The earliest extant tujing, discovered in the Dunhuang Library Cave, is the Illustrated Treatise of the Shazhou Protectorate. Compiled during the High Tang period, it records the geography, history, and customs of Tang-era Shazhou and its subordinate counties, Dunhuang and Shouchang, comprising 667 lines.
