Chubby considered herself the village's most capable cat. Sure, she could catch mice like any house cat, but she could also judge a barbecue competition and, for a fee of one lightly salted grilled skewer, find lost cats. Her palate was legendary. She once settled a bet between two men by choosing the superior piece of meat with a single, decisive paw. One night, during a rainstorm, she was curled under a rock when a frantic human appeared with two fragrant skewers and a piece of cloth that smelled of another cat. She understood: another cat had run off. These house cats always wanted to be strays; they deserved a good scolding. The human was overjoyed and walked off under his umbrella. She licked the last of the grilled meat from her whiskers and curled back up, hoping her dreams would always be this sunny and delicious.
