Since the late Tang Dynasty, warfare has gradually engulfed the realm. Bones lie exposed in fields, and no roosters crow for days of walk. Villagers built shrines to honor innocent wandering souls from the four wilds, comforting those spirits who were unable to return home. Occasionally, butterflies flutter around shrine niches, disappearing into the incense smoke, impossible to catch. Villagers say these butterflies may be transformed souls, perhaps spirits that finally found their way home.
