A child got separated from the group in the middle of the lantern fair. But he did not cry, and did not go running around looking for anyone either. After making one loop through the crowd, he found an old wooden crate for storing flower lanterns and sat down on it. An old man selling sugar figurines spotted the child from a distance. He slowly made his way over and handed over a paper pinwheel he had just finished. "Don't worry," he said, his voice soft and slow. "The person looking for you is already on the way." The child nodded. And truly, he was not afraid. Then the wind picked up. The pinwheel began to turn. Its blades opened in a rush, like a flower coming into bloom. Through that spinning burst of color, he looked out and saw the whole fair transformed: the sky was flushed pink, fish lanterns drifted by trailing lines of gold, and even the distant cries from the street seemed to blur into the lights. For a moment, the whole world in front of the child felt huge, slow, and softer than it had any right to be.
