Dahu wasn’t from Kaifeng. He once thought Kaifeng was a city of savory aromas, with fragrant meals, heaping plates of food, and mellow wine. Back then, his only wish was to come to Kaifeng and be a mouse in the city, it would still be better than begging for scraps by the ditches in his hometown. But he never expected Kaifeng to be this vast. Vast enough that he couldn’t catch a whiff of those tempting scents, vast enough that even the people around him couldn’t afford a single steamed bun. He gave his last steamed bun to Erniu. From then on, Kaifeng City had two more mice who depended on each other to survive.
