For a long time, winning was all he cared about. Yet no matter how hard he tried, he could never defeat his father. Later, maybe he could have—but by then, his father was gone. Slowly, he began to learn how to lose. Losing wasn't so bad—when others were happy, he'd earn money. So what did it mean? Losing the game, but winning at life. He tossed the pouch of coins in his hand and remembered his father's words again. The path of chess—knights moving in L-shapes, elephants leaping diagonally—is narrow.
