Waitie's best skill was waiting. No matter the wind or rain, thunder or lightning, every night at the hour of Xu Hour, Waitie would appear at the crossroads, waiting for his master to return. But Waitie didn't understand why he hadn't seen his master for three years. Where did he go? Waitie remembered his master saying he was researching a way to fly into the sky. Perhaps his master was flying up there and couldn't come down for a while. So Waitie kept waiting. When his dog friends called him to play, he ignored them; when humans in masks told him to move, he didn't respond. Waitie didn't want his master to return one day and find no soft belly, no fuzzy head, and no perked-up ears waiting for him. That person might return tomorrow, or perhaps never.
