It is said the Khitan forebear came riding east from White Wolf Lake upon a white horse, where he met a heavenly maiden descending the Wolf River in a cart drawn by a blue ox. Where the two waters joined, the eight Khitan tribes were born. Abuli, a princess of the Khitan, was born with white hair and skin like snow, and so was held to be the white horse reborn beneath the gods. From childhood she learned the drum, the whip, and the shaman's art of calling spirits.
In the sixth year of Huitong, after an auspicious dream, Abuli asked to ride with the army. On the banks of the Hutuo River, she raised a wood altar in preparation for Yelu Deguang's second Chai Ce ritual. Bells rang to drive off spirits, and sacred fire rose to heaven—the Khitan were ready to enter the Central Plains.
