The Flaws of Iron Smelting I observe that the co-fusion method is prevalent: pouring molten crude iron over wrought iron and forging repeatedly. Yet the iron often appears dull gray, suffering from weak steel structure! Detailed examination of the causes: First, Impurities: Iron ore is piled outdoors; rain causes red rust, and sulfur and soil mix in heavily. Second, Coarse Grains: Crushed ore is thrown into the furnace, but wind and fire cannot penetrate; the charcoal is not fully burnt before the iron forms slag. Third, Huge Waste: To obtain refined iron, one must increase charcoal and extend firing time. The people say, 'Ten catties of charcoal for one catty of iron.' How painful! Now I attempt "Fine Ore Pelletizing." It is not for novelty, but to truly solve these three harms.
