Piaoyao Battleboard, prevalent in Hexi, was designed to commemorate the Han Dynasty General Huo Qubing (titled "Piaoyao General"). It was derived from Danqi, which was popular in Chang'an. Shen Kuo believed Danqi originated in the Han Dynasty: "Emperor Yuan of Han enjoyed Cuju but found it tiring, so he sought something similar but less strenuous, thus creating Danqi." The Tang Dynasty marked the peak of Danqi's development, with this skill-based game frequently becoming a subject of poetry.
