Jumper was a stray who found his purpose as a guard dog. He still carries the faint memory of that rainy night when a boy carried him home. The house was warm, dry, and smelled of meat. Jumper had only ever watched such a place from a distance, never daring to approach. His favorite game with the boy was "Jump High." No matter how high the little hand reached, Jumper would leap and tap it, steady every time. Years passed. The boy grew up, and Jumper went from pup to old dog. His master no longer stayed home all day. He left each morning and returned at night, sighing, rubbing his back, worn thin by the world. But every day before leaving, he would look back at Jumper. At first, Jumper thought it was time for Jump High; he'd try to leap, though his strength was failing. But his master never raised his hand. Instead, each morning, he bent down and held Jumper close.
