On the west side of the Imperial City, Shengping Tower is a rare pocket of quiet elegance. The courtyard opens wide, with a pond, pavilions and terraces all around, and a central stage for music and dance.
It was built for banquets. Back when Empress Dowager Mingxian was alive, she often came to watch performances, and even hosted family feasts here with His Majesty and his brothers. The archery contests were the liveliest part, all to amuse their mother.
These days frugality is the rule, banquets are few, and the tower has gone quiet. The musicians and performers have time on their hands, and they do not seem to mind. If I weren't here on official business, I'd spend the night with a jar of wine and listen until dawn.
