Forsaken Quarter lies in the southeast corner of Kaifeng, once part of the city's hundred wards. However, in the 4th year of the Kaiyun Reign (947 CE) of the Jin Dynasty, when the Khitan attacked the city, this area was pillaged and burned, causing countless civilian casualties. Subsequently, constrained by lack of manpower and resources, it remained unrepaired, gradually becoming a dilapidated settlement for the poor. The city's elite shunned it completely. Moreover, due to a "corner gate" in its southeast, it earned the derogatory name "Forsaken Quarter".
