In ancient times, Yu the Great governed the realm by taming the waters. To the west, he carved out the Western River and Yudou to drain the Great Waters; to the north, he raised dams at Fangyuan and Gushui to divert the floods, splitting the streams at Mount Dizhu and cutting through the Dragon Gate to benefit the peoples of Yan, Dai, Hu, Mo, and the Western River. In the east, he drained the stagnant lands, contained the Mengzhu Marshes, and channeled the waters into nine streams to secure the eastern territories, bringing prosperity to the people of Jizhou. To the south, he guided the Yangtze, Han, Huai, and Ru rivers eastward into the Five Lakes, bestowing his grace upon the peoples of Jing, Chu, Yu, Yue, and the southern tribes.
Such were the deeds of Yu. Today, I seek to follow his example, to practice the Way of Universal Love.
