In the 13th year of Jian'an, Cao Cao led two hundred thousand troops down the river. Zhou Yu led thirty thousand elite troops up to Xiakou, joining Liu Bei's forces at Fankou to advance west. They met Cao's army at Red Cliff. Zhou Yu adopted Huang Gai's plan of fire attack and a ruse of surrender. Huang Gai led ten warships filled with firewood and oil, pretending to surrender. Two miles from Cao's camp, the ships were lit and driven by the wind into Cao's fleet. Cao's army was utterly defeated; ships were burned, and the fire spread to the camps on the shore, causing heavy casualties. Cao Cao ordered the remaining ships burned and retreated.
