After the Qiongqi disaster, the stone steps collapsed, becoming dangerously steep. Travelers had to detour for miles, enduring arduous treks.
As a vital north-south route, its ruin inconvenienced the people. Funds were gathered to hire skilled stonemasons. They carved firm rocks from Mount Taihang into steps, linked them with iron chains, and placed wooden beams in perilous spots to ensure safe passage. The work took a month. From dawn to dusk, hammer blows echoed in the valley, and stone dust filled the air. Spared by wind and rain, the construction was swiftly completed.
Once completed, the ladder stood seventy rods high, winding like a dragon straight into the clouds.
Travelers climbing from Shenze can reach Heaven's Threshold in half a day. Descending from Heaven's Threshold to Suixiang is effortless. Disciples and commoners save thirty miles of travel, and pilgrims avoid rugged paths.
