When the sky-darkening sandstorm subsided, Karez was the first to light a flame. Drawn by that beacon, survivors from the surrounding lands came, supporting one another as they arrived. Unable to forget their kin lost to the desert, the people lingered long upon the dunes. As days and nights turned, they gradually learned to understand the language of the wind. From that day forth, the sandstorms could no longer harm Karez. Cooking smoke rises daily from the village; traveling merchants often take lodging there, and lost wanderers find rest. Karez guides all travelers on their way home.
