In the fifth year of Xiande, the Later Zhou army achieved a major victory in its southern expedition. Li Jing of the Southern Tang, seeing the formidable Zhou fleet on the river, realized his forces were outmatched and pleaded: "I beg to return and submit a formal surrender, ceding all lands north of the Yangtze." Emperor Shizong agreed, addressing Li Jing in writing as "The Emperor Respectfully Inquires of the Lord of Jiangnan," stripping him of imperial titles and demoting his realm to the Kingdom of Jiangnan.
