Niu Ben often feels helpless in the face of his father's stubbornness, but no matter how hard he tries, he can never change the old man's mind. Back in the Forsaken Quarter, his father, Niu Mang, had taken to the streets to sell steamed veggies with flour after witnessing how many neighbors were struggling to afford even a single meal. The price he charged was next to nothing, and whenever children came by, he would ladle in extra sesame oil and toss in wild mushrooms and meat broth. It was a business that brought no profit, but Niu Mang never uttered a word of complaint. He simply wanted to ease the hardship of those around him in whatever small way he could. After the Unbound Cavern took control of the District, the area became a haven for swordsmen, and some of them, too, began lining up at Niu Mang's stall. Noticing this, he quietly added a new dish stir-fried chicken noodles, priced a little higher, onto his menu. Niu Ben observes it all in silence. He doesn't interfere but supports his father, secretly paying the Unbound Cavern a protection fee, just to make sure no one will lay a hand on the old man or his humble little stall.
