Legend says that Zhao Kuangyin, Emperor Taizu of Song, had a stone stele secretly carved in Jianlong, Year 3 (962) and placed in a hidden chamber within the palace sleeping quarters.
It is said to bear three vows:
1. To protect the Later Zhou Chai clan.
2. To safeguard the scholar-officials, including remonstrating officials who submitted memorials and debated state affairs.
3. If the Zhao descendants failed to uphold the first two vows, they would incur Heaven's wrath.
