Said to originate from the Tale of the Soaring Dragon by Zhao Pu, this story told how the young Zhao Kuangyin, before ascending as Emperor, Taizu of Song, punished a local tyrant and fled Bianjing in disguise to escape retribution. One day, while passing by Qingyou Monastery in Taiyuan, he rescued a suffering maiden, Zhao Jingniang, imprisoned by bandits. To protect her from further harm, Zhao Kuangyin swore siblinghood with her and escorted her safely across a thousand miles back to her home.
