In ancient times, a primitive water gauge, known as Shuize or Shuizhi, was used to measure the rise and fall of water levels in rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. By the Northern Song Dynasty, these gauges had become common practice. Stone fish or tablets were placed in the water, marked with etchings to track water levels and gauge flood risks.
