Han Ping married Lady He. King Kang of the State of Song, coveting her beauty, seized her and imprisoned Han Ping until his death. In her grief, Lady He threw herself from a terrace and perished. The furious king ordered them buried apart. Overnight, two catalpa trees sprang up from their graves, their roots and branches intertwined. A pair of mandarin ducks perched in the trees, necks entwined, crying mournfully. The people of Song were moved by their fate and called the trees the "Trees of Longing."
