In Chengdu Prefecture of the Shu Kingdom, there lived a renowned brocade family headed by Lord Wang. Fond of circular patterns, he named his son Wang Tuanhua. As a teenager, Wang Tuanhua revealed a unique talent: no matter how damaged the fabric, he could always find a way to restore it using unconventional methods.
Business thrived, but the rebellious youth grew restless. Worse, he loathed his name, "Wang Tuanhua, Wang Tuanhua", a constant mockery in his ears. He longed to vanish where no one knew him. So he fled.
His nature-driven wanderings soon led him astray in the mountains, stumbling upon a hermitage where an unassuming old monk lived. Wang Tuanhua discovered the monk was a master of calligraphy and painting, and pestered him for lessons. Thereafter, he escaped home periodically to study. Gifted and driven, within three to five years, he mastered seven or eight out of ten of the monk's skills, even learning to mask his presence. Gradually, his fame as a prodigy in art spread throughout Shu.
