When lazy, a catfish bites the hook. When diligent, a Peng soars across the sea. Many ancient Chinese texts contain clear references to catfish, using different characters. Northerners called it "yan", while southerners called it "nian". Yan referred to its flat head, and nian to its slippery skin. In ancient times, catfish were also a key species in freshwater aquaculture.
