If you wish to know what the Mohist Voice is, you should first ask Mohway. Yes, that black furball usually curled up asleep at Yu Ge's grandfather's desk.
Grandfather often said that all things have a sound. During the years he spent developing the voice box, he created countless noises: the crisp snap of bamboo slips, the rustle of paper meeting ink, the low hum of turning gears. Yet Mohway was never disturbed, sleeping soundly through every sound. Grandfather would tiptoe to the cat, holding the voice box near its furry cheek to capture its rising and falling purrs. Sometimes as faint as a child's breath, sometimes as steady as water simmering on a stove.
Grandfather found it amusing and would occasionally ask, "Mohway, Mohway, you sleep so much; have you heard a wonderful sound in your dreams that I cannot?"
Mohway would only curl into a tighter circle, as if all the world's complex noises were merely background for its dreams.
Grandfather couldn't help but remember the day he found Mohway. A faint meow from the wall harmonized perfectly with the rain he had just recorded, forming a melody of its own.
In this life, he might never discover what the true "Mohist Voice" was. But this kitten and he were meant to be.
Once, Mohway suddenly woke from a dream.
Grandfather was practicing his old training verses alone. Mohway walked over softly, nuzzled Grandfather's hand, and let out a meow that was captured forever by the spinning voice box. According to Yu Ge, that was Grandfather's final duet.
Later, Grandfather was gone.
Mohway still sleeps until the sun dips low.
The house no longer holds the old bustle. Logically, with no one to disturb it, the dreams should be more peaceful.
But now, every time Mohway wakes here, the silence of the room feels louder than all the previous sounds combined.
It licks its paws and lets out a meow to the sky.
This cry is louder than usual, as if by instinct.
As if waiting for someone to answer.
