The ancients believed that a carp could leap the Dragon Gate and transform into a dragon, making it the most revered species among fish. According to the Character Dictionary the Book of Shennong: "The carp is king of fish, regardless of size. It has thirty-six scales along each side of its spine, each bearing a small black dot, and its colors include red, white, and yellow." China's earliest fish farming manual, Fan Li's Fish Farming Classic, also records methods for raising carp.
